As part of the National Eye Donation Fortnight (August 25 – September 8), Rotary Rajan Eye Bank, in association with Rajan Eye Care Hospital and Rotary Club of Madras T. Nagar, organised an awareness rally on Sunday at Elliot’s Beach.
Over 1,000 students, members of Rotary, social organisations and the public participated. The rally was flagged off by Padma Shri awardee and table tennis champion Sharath Kamal, who also pledged his eyes, in the presence of Rotary Governor D. Devendran and Sujatha Mohan, director, Rotary Rajan Eye Bank.
Highlighting the need for eye donation, Mohan Raj, district chairman for Eye Care, said, “There are about 2.5 million people in the country living with corneal problems, the majority below the age of 15. To address this, we need more people to donate their eyes and rallies like this help spread the message”.
