Klint Kubiak's offense leaves much to be desired in Seahawks Week 1 loss

New Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak made his official debut in Sunday's 17-13 Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. There was significant excitement surrounding the debut of Kubiak's offense. It ultimately failed to meet expectations, though there's obviously still time for improvement.

The Seahawks managed just 13 points. New starting quarterback Sam Darnold threw for 150 yards and zero touchdowns. The offense was 3-of-10 on third down, gained just 230 total net yards, fumbled three times (losing two), and lost the time of possession (TOP) battle 37:58-22:02.

Though he fumbled twice, losing one, superstar wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba was the entire offense. JSN recorded nine receptions for 124 yards. No other pass-catcher surpassed 15 receiving yards, with Cooper Kupp registering two catches for 15 yards. Seattle's third-leading receiver had one catch for seven yards.

We’ll see who else steps up so it’s not just the Jax show [Smith-Njigba] every snap," a frustrated Mike Macdonald told reporters after the game.

Perhaps what was most disappointing was the Seahawks' lackluster rushing attack. Much focus was placed this offseason on fielding a run-first, grind-it-out offense. Zach Charbonnet was the team's leading rusher with just 47 yards (3.9 YPC) and a touchdown. Lead back Kenneth Walker III was limited to 20 yards via 10 carries, as the Seahawks gained a measly 84 net yards on the ground.

Kubiak's offense did not enforce its identity on a 49ers run defense that entered Week 1 with question marks. Seattle's offense needs to be far more productive against a Pittsburgh Steelers defense in Week 2 that forfeited 32 points to the New York Jets on Sunday. Kubiak's unit requires instant improvement.
