Trump’s Aspirin Regimen: A Closer Look

During a recent discussion on prescription drug costs at the White House, former President Donald Trump revealed he has been taking a higher-than-recommended dose of aspirin daily for 25 years.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Trump, 79, explained, “Aspirin helps thin the blood, and I prefer it that way for my heart’s health. Does that make sense?”

Trump consumes 325 milligrams of aspirin daily, significantly more than the advised 81 milligrams for heart disease prevention.

Medical Insights on Aspirin Use

Since 2022, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has advised against starting daily aspirin for those over 60 without existing heart conditions. They suggest discontinuing it around age 75.

Here’s what you should know about aspirin’s role in heart health.

Understanding Aspirin’s Role

Aspirin, related to ibuprofen and naproxen, reduces blood clot formation at low doses. It’s widely used for pain relief and as a preventive measure for heart issues in older adults.

Determining the Right Dosage

Experts recommend 81 milligrams daily to lower cardiovascular risks. A 2021 study found no added benefit from higher doses like Trump’s 325 milligrams.

Dr. Eleanor Levin from Stanford Medicine notes that while some tolerate higher doses, it’s generally unnecessary.

For those with specific heart conditions, lifelong low-dose aspirin may be essential.

Potential Side Effects

Though safer than other blood thinners, aspirin can increase bleeding risks, especially in the stomach and brain. These risks grow with age and alcohol use.

Trump’s doctor attributes his bruising and minor bleeding to aspirin use, which is common and not alarming.

Is More Aspirin Beneficial?

Dr. Levin suggests Trump’s aspirin use isn’t life-threatening but advises against unnecessary high doses. Extremely high doses pose significant safety risks.

She emphasizes informed discussions with patients about risks and benefits, guided by research.
