Unconventional Dialogues: A Gathering of Influential Minds
On Monday, a diverse group of luminaries from Hollywood, sports, politics, and academia convened for the fourth annual A Day of Unreasonable Conversation. This one-day summit, aimed at challenging beliefs and broadening perspectives, sought to influence the narratives portrayed on screen.
Leadership and Opening Remarks
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Greg Berlanti, and Simpson Street’s Kerry Washington and Pilar Savone co-chaired the event at The Getty Center in Los Angeles, with The Hollywood Reporter as a media partner. Washington addressed the audience, primarily composed of TV writers, producers, and executives, emphasizing the importance of storytelling in a polarized media landscape. “Good storytelling transcends binaries,” she remarked, urging attendees to embrace complexity for deeper understanding.
Savone echoed this sentiment, stating, “Today’s event is designed to challenge and expand your perspectives. Even in Hollywood, we risk echoing only familiar voices, which can stifle our stories.”
Engaging Discussions Across Various Topics
The day featured discussions on politics, social media, journalism, education, climate change, and more. Notable participants included Don Cheadle, Lisa Joy, Mara Brock Akil, and others. Vice President Kamala Harris made a special appearance, closing the event with a conversation that resonated with the audience, while Atsuko Okatsuka served as the emcee.

Political Conversations and Personal Reflections
Politics dominated the discussions, with W. Kamau Bell humorously noting the relentless nature of activism. “As a Black person, I can’t afford to be exhausted,” he quipped, highlighting the ongoing struggle against fascism. “It’s up to each of us to combat it,” he urged.
Vice President Harris, promoting her book 107 Days, shared her emotional response to losing the election to Trump, comparing it to personal grief. She encouraged creators to channel their emotions into their work, emphasizing the power of storytelling in turbulent times.
Addressing censorship concerns, Harris acknowledged the challenges faced by those in Hollywood. “Speaking truth carries risks,” she noted, urging individuals to make personal decisions about their candor.

Exploring the Impact of Artificial Intelligence
Joseph Gordon-Levitt led a discussion on the role of A.I. in Hollywood and beyond. He expressed concerns about the ethical implications of current business models, stating, “These technologies are impressive, but the financial structures are unfair.” He advocated for a more equitable distribution of profits to those who contribute to the data that powers A.I.
Gordon-Levitt warned of a dystopian future if tech companies continue to exploit creators without compensation. “This isn’t just about Hollywood,” he emphasized, “it’s about the broader implications for our economy and society.”
A Day of Unreasonable Conversation is a Propper Daley BPI initiative, in collaboration with Invisible Hand.
