Political Tensions Lead to Travel Restrictions
BEIJING – Over the weekend, Nathan Law, a prominent activist from Hong Kong, was barred from entering Singapore, a move he attributes to political motives.
Law, who relocated to London in 2020, was stopped at Singapore’s airport on Saturday night. After a four-hour wait, he was informed that he could not enter the country.
Event Participation Blocked
Law intended to participate in a private, invitation-only gathering. Despite having a visa, he was sent back to San Francisco after spending approximately 14 hours in Singapore.
“I suspect political reasons behind the denial, though I can’t confirm if external influences, like the PRC, played a role,” Law stated, referencing China by its official name, the People’s Republic of China.
Singapore’s Official Stance
The Singaporean government confirmed the entry refusal, emphasizing that visa holders undergo additional scrutiny at the border. They highlighted an arrest warrant issued by Hong Kong authorities under the National Security Law.
“Allowing Law into Singapore would not align with our national interests,” stated the Home Affairs Ministry.
Background on Nathan Law
Law is among several activists who left Hong Kong following the 2020 National Security Law, which has led to numerous imprisonments. In 2023, Hong Kong police issued warrants for Law and others, offering rewards for information leading to their capture.
Accusations against Law include colluding with foreign entities and advocating for Hong Kong’s independence through various public channels.
Historical Context
Hong Kong, a region with its own legal system, faced a significant crackdown by Beijing in 2020 after widespread protests. Law gained recognition during the 2014 Umbrella Movement alongside Joshua Wong, who is currently incarcerated.
In 2016, Law was elected to the legislative council but was disqualified for altering his oath of allegiance to China.
