A recent report has surfaced involving a Russian commander’s drastic measures to maintain control over his troops. According to Ukraine’s military intelligence, an intercepted call from September 25 reveals the commander instructing his soldiers to fire upon any comrades attempting to retreat in Donetsk Oblast.

Ukrainian Advances in Donetsk

As Ukrainian forces push forward in their counteroffensive, they have reclaimed approximately 160 square kilometers of territory in Donetsk Oblast. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on September 18 that seven villages, including those in the Dobropillia and Pokrovsk areas, are now back under Ukrainian control, as confirmed by Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Allegations of Brutal Enforcement

While the authenticity of the audio remains unverified, the commander’s alleged words were stark: “No retreat is allowed. Anyone attempting to flee will be shot.” This harsh directive highlights the severe conditions faced by Russian troops, with reports indicating over 50,000 soldiers have deserted since February 2022, often under dire circumstances.

Instances of Desperation

In a separate incident, Ukrainian journalist Yurii Butusov shared a video on Telegram showing a Russian soldier being shot by his comrade while trying to surrender along the Zaporizhzhia front. The footage, captured by a drone, depicts the soldier’s desperate attempt to escape before collapsing.

Wagner Group’s Notorious Tactics

The Wagner mercenary group, known for its ruthless methods, has been implicated in executing soldiers attempting to retreat. Such actions serve as a grim warning to others. Following Moscow’s partial mobilization in September 2022, President Vladimir Putin increased penalties for desertion and surrender, with sentences ranging from three to ten years.
