A catastrophic collision between a fuel train and a truck in Russia’s Smolensk region led to a fiery explosion. The incident occurred near the Belarus border early Friday morning, as reported by local authorities.

The truck reportedly entered the tracks just as the train was approaching, leaving the train driver with no time to halt. Despite applying emergency brakes, the collision was inevitable, according to a statement from Moscow Railway.

The collision resulted in the derailment of the locomotive and 18 fuel carriages, several of which erupted in flames. Firefighters quickly arrived to tackle the blaze, which was captured on video by passing drivers.

Images depict a significant portion of the train engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

The train driver and an assistant sustained injuries and were transported to a hospital. Tragically, the truck driver did not survive the crash.

Authorities have launched a criminal investigation, with some speculating potential sabotage as a cause.

The accident disrupted rail traffic on the crucial route between Moscow and western Russia for several hours as emergency services worked to control the fire.

This incident coincides with ongoing Ukrainian military operations targeting Russian energy facilities.

Recent drone strikes on an oil pumping station in the Chuvash Republic have halted operations there.

These attacks have exacerbated a severe fuel shortage in Russia, leading to the closure of numerous petrol stations.

Reports from Russian Telegram channels suggest that approximately 360 petrol stations have depleted their fuel supplies.

Regions such as Moscow, Leningrad, Ryazan, and Nizhny Novgorod are experiencing significant supply disruptions.
