Political Background and Campaign Launch
Matt Pelikan, known for his progressive legal work and involvement in political campaigns from Paul Wellstone to Hillary Clinton, is set to declare his candidacy for Hennepin County Attorney. His announcement comes as he seeks to succeed Mary Moriarty, whose term he describes as problematic.
Pelikan’s deep connections with the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) include roles such as finance director for the Ohio Democratic Party during Barack Obama’s campaign and a voter-protection lawyer for Clinton. He also secured the Democratic endorsement for Minnesota attorney general in 2018.
Critique of Current Administration
Pelikan is the first candidate to openly challenge Moriarty, labeling her leadership as detrimental to progress. In a recent interview, he cited her strained relations with law enforcement and criticized her policies, such as halting felony charges from minor traffic stops, which he argues undermines criminal prosecution.
He contends that Moriarty’s approach has alienated key figures like Attorney General Keith Ellison and Governor Tim Walz, and has failed to address issues like homelessness and crime in Minneapolis.
Vision for Hennepin County
Pelikan believes that while socioeconomic factors contribute to crime, they do not excuse it. He emphasizes the need for humane responses to societal challenges without compromising on accountability.
As candidates position themselves against Moriarty’s reformist policies, Pelikan aims to balance data-driven decisions with traditional justice approaches.
Endorsements and Political Journey
While Frazier and Nguyen have secured endorsements from prominent figures like Ellison and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, Pelikan’s political journey began in Northfield, inspired by early experiences at a precinct caucus.
His career has been shaped by grassroots advocacy, legal education at the University of Minnesota, and clerkships at the Minnesota Supreme Court.
Leadership and Future Plans
Despite acknowledging others may have more experience, Pelikan is eager to lead the County Attorney’s Office, focusing on transparency and collaboration with seasoned prosecutors.
“I’m prepared to make impactful decisions and empower the team,” he stated, expressing enthusiasm for the challenges ahead.
